MYTHOLOGY & ASSOCIATION

Our synthetic amethyst is based on the natural gem that has shaped myths and legends for millenia. In Greek mythology, a young maiden named Amethystos was turned into a statue of pure quartz by Diana, goddess of the hunt and the moon, in order to prevent Dionysus, the god of intoxication, exacting revenge on Amethystos for setting tigers on her. When Dionysus saw what happened, he was remorseful and cried tears of wine, turning the quartz purple. Based on this legend, the Greeks often served wine from amethyst goblets to prevent overindulgence and control tempers.

As purple has long been considered a royal colour, the amethyst has historical importance as an insignia of power. Fine amethysts are featured on the British Crown Jewels and they were also a favourite of Catherine the Great and Egyptian royalty.

Amethyst was also a favourite stone in the high ranks of the Christian church, referred to as the stone of bishops. In fact, many fine amethysts are set in Episcopal rings.

Throughout history, amethyst has been viewed as a stone for clarity, calmness and protection from sorcerers and thieves, often gifted as a symbol of sincerity, security and peace of mind.
